Some of the plot owners of Shachaythang, the new Sarpang town area, have begun the much awaited house construction. This comes after His Majesty granted timber kidu to some 49 plot owners.

Timber kidu recipients were granted six standing trees free of royalty and another six at a rural royalty rate.

Finding a space to run their businesses have been a struggle for the shopkeepers after the swollen Sarpang river broke its bank and washed away the entire old Sarpang town in July last year. The construction of houses in the new township will ease this problem.

Jaiprakash Gupta is one of the plot owners. Like other plot owners, he is constructing a single storied commercial space. “Apart from receiving timber kidu, we are also being provided with sand and stones at rural rates, “said Jaiprakash.

Gopilal Karki, another plot owner said constructing houses in the new town has become a necessity after the flood disaster. “There is no profit in running businesses in rented apartments. The government has spent a huge amount of money in the town planning. We have to do our part by beginning the construction works.”

Shaythathang is located along the Gelephu-Wangdue highway, nearly two kilometres away from the former Sarpang town.
