Come this October, and some 500 Bhutanese youth will leave for Japan to study and work. This is as part of the Labour ministry’s overseas employment programme.
So far, around 67 Bhutanese youth have left for Japan under the programme. Additional 64 youth will fly to Japan, this July.
Currently, youth are attending Japanese language course. They are guaranteed part time job after reaching Japan. Most of them are delighted and excited to work at the same time study in foreign land.
“I feel that with growing number of job seekers in Bhutan, there is less job opportunities especially for young people like us. So I feel searching for better opportunity internationally would be better for our future,” said one of the youth, Phuntsho Dorji.
Like Phuntsho, others are also looking forward to travel to Japan and do something productive.
“Firstly, I want to experience myself with new people over there and experience Japanese culture and if possible I’m thinking to pursue my further studies too,” said another man, Tshering Dorji.
The labour ministry in collaboration with the Central Bank and Finance ministry is helping the interested youth avail themselves of the loan for the programme.
It is to cover expenses for visa, travel, training, and study. The candidates will study and work in Japan for two years.
“If you are a class 12 pass out, after taking two years of language course, you will be given an opportunity to either join a vocational institute or an industrial attachment for another two years or so. And after that, depending on your skills, you will be helped to find a regular job. For those who are university graduates, after undergoing two years of Japanese language course, you will have the right to work. We are hoping that it will be an attractive option for our unemployed youth,” said the Director General of the Department of Employment, Sherab Tenzin.
The labour ministry said candidates will be frequently monitored as the programme is fully coordinated by the ministry. Additionally, the ministry recently launched the Overseas Education and Skill Development Scheme to foster similar programmes in future.
