Drink driving continues to be a concern with intoxicated drivers behind the wheel causing accidents topping the traffic violations list in Thimphu for nine years in a row now.

Last year, the Traffic Division recorded 1,439 cases. This year, 266 cases of drink driving have been reported in the first three months.

In a latest drink driving accident that took place near the Lungtenzampa BOD early yesterday morning, Thimphu Traffic police has charged a 20-year-old man with reckless driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

A dramatic CCTV footage of the accident released by RBP shows the over speeding car hitting and breaking a traffic sign post erected on the road divider, which causes the car to topple twice before landing on a road divider at the intersection near Lungtenzampa BOD.

There were three other youths in the car. Two of them tested positive for both alcohol and drugs. All four of them miraculously survived with minor injuries.

Police are blaming easy availability of alcohol and low penalty for drink driving for the rising number of drink driving cases. The fine for drink driving at the moment is Nu 1,750. Traffic police are seeking to increase the fine. They are also planning to carry out awareness programmes to prevent people from driving in drunken stupor.
