Punakha windstorm damage 318 houses in 9 gewogs

Strong winds have wreaked havoc in Punakha. It has caused damage to some 318 houses in nine gewogs including four Lhakhangs and two schools.

While roofs of some houses have been blown off completely, other houses suffered partial damage to its roofs.

Apart from roof damage, the windstorm, which struck the dzongkhag yesterday afternoon, also caused severe and partial structural damage to the houses.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay who rushed to Punakha reassured the affected households about prompt insurance claims.

The affected nine gewogs are Guma, Chhubu, Goenshari, Kabisa, Toedpaisa and Shelnga-Bjemi, Dzomi, Toedwang, Talog. Kabisa is reported to be the hardest hit with 150 houses left with damaged roofs.

The affected families received tarpaulin sheets and other emergency relief kits from the Dzongkhag Disaster Management team.
