Monks residing at Dongkola in Paro are confronted with water problem, for many years now. With no water source nearby, it has been an everyday battle for the monks in fetching water.
There is a water pump from the river below. But, since the monastery is perched high up in the mountain, the water does not reach the place regularly. And the holy water is about an hour downhill from the temple.
So harvesting rainwater is the only option. In summer, the rain water is collected in a water tank through a rain gutter. While in winter, the monks store snow water, which is then used for drinking.
“We have water problem here. There is no source to channel water to the temple. The water pump also does not work most of the time. We go to Thimphu and Paro sometimes to wash our cloths,” shared a monk, Tenzin.
During the annual ritual, organisers fetch water from Paro using vehicles. However for daily offerings, the monks walk for an hour to get the water. Due to its location, the authorities are also helpless.
