Gengu Village under Darla Gewog in Chhukha does not have a Lhakhang. Without it, villagers travel to other places where there are temples to offer prayers and accumulate merits during auspicious days.

During usual days, they circumambulate the chorten and mani dungkhor in the village.

Villagers said the non-existence of Lhakhang has made organising rituals difficult.

“There is a dire need of a lhakhang in our village. It is very hard to get monks to perform rituals. Moreover, during the auspicious days, we have to travel long distances to pay our offerings,” said one of the villagers, Gangto Drukpa.

Gangto’s village mates also said the issue was tabled in the gewog level meeting.

“We discussed the need of a lhakhang in the gewog meeting too. The need of is very genuine, so people always put up the issue during gewog meetings,” said another villager, Rinchen Dorji.

However, gewog officials said providing drinking water, construction of farm road, and irrigation canal are the foremost priorities of the gewog’s plan. But, if fund is adequate, considerations can be made.

“If there is leftover budget for other plans, then we think of lhakhang construction. We discussed about it with the people during meetings,” said the Gup of Darla Gewog, Mil Kumar Mongar.

Gewog officials added the matter will be broached upon in the Gewog Tshogde and then will be submitted in the Dzongkhag Tshogdu.

Gengu Village is home to over 65 households.
