Bhutan gifted land to the Bangladesh government to construct its Embassy at Hejo in Thimphu.

His Majesty The King graced the ceremony along with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who unveiled the foundation stone plaque, yesterday morning.

Total area of 1.5 acres of land has been allotted on User Right Deed for the construction of the Bangladesh Embassy.

“I am very grateful to His Majesty The King and the Royal Government of Bhutan. We are going to build our own Chancery. We are very happy. The friendship and cooperation between the two countries, is historical, and will continue,” said Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina.

The area, spanning over 32 acres at Hejo has been identified as Diplomatic Enclave in the Thimphu Structural Plan 2002-2027. It will accommodate 16 embassies.

“In future all the embassies will be accommodated in this area and this has been already identified. The land we have allotted today is purely based on User Right deeds,” shared National Land Commission Secretary, Pema Chewang.

The diplomatic relations between the two countries was established in 1973. Bhutan was the first country to recognise the independence of Bangladesh.
