Local leaders of Thimphu will not allow officials to use English language while providing trainings and workshops for local leaders.
This was discussed during the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu (DT) in Thimphu.
The local leaders said, they face difficulty in understanding English as most of them did not receive modern education. They said officials use English for their conveniences.
“Most officials send us letter and deliver speeches in English today,” said Kawang Gup Thukten Wangchuk. “After spending huge expenses to conduct trainings, it is of no use, if we don’t understand,” he added.
According to them, making Dzongkha mandatory while conducting trainings will help to preserve the national language.
“For a small country like ours, I don’t think it is so difficult to preserve our national language,” said Lingzhi Gup Wangdi.
The Dzongkhag Tshogdu chairperson also feels that local leaders are equally responsible in reminding the officials for the matter. “We should take it as a serious issue. Till now, we failed our role but from now it should not be the case,” said Gado.
After extensive discussions, the members decided to send its resolution to the respective ministries and stakeholders for implementation.
