The unpleasant smell emitted from the landfill site in Yangtse Gewog under Trashi Yangtse has been bothering the villagers for years now.
Without waste segregation, all kinds of trash generated by the residents of Trashi Yangtse are dumped at the disposal site, producing foul smell. Animals are also seen hunting for food around it, every day. Add to this, the landfill is located near the old dzong where the monastic body resides.
To address the issue, the local leaders of Yangtse Gewog are anticipating to seek Dzongkhag Administration’s help.
“We are going to propose regarding the inconveniences of the landfill to the dzongkhag. It is oddly located in residential place and cattle are eating plastic and metallic waste, thereby leading to their death,” said Gonpo, Yangtse Gup. “Last year four cows died and when veterinarians investigated, it was known that there were plastics and bottles in the carcasses.”
Yangtse Gewog Administration has been requesting the Dzongkhag to shift the place since 2015 and the matter was extensively debated in the earlier Dzongkhag Tshogdu meetings.
However, municipal officials said walls and an entry gate had been constructed it would restrict cattle to graze in the dump yard. Meanwhile, shifting of the landfill might happen within the next five year plan but for waste segregation, it is not likely to happen any time soon.
