Within a period of seven months, the Bhutan Taxi Association (BTA) has received an overwhelming support from taxi operators in the country.
Till date, about 3,000 taxi drivers have registered with the association, which was formed in May, this year.
Sensitising about 30 taxi operators in Trongsa, the President of the association said, it is high time to have an association for taxis in the country. He said currently about 7,000 taxi drivers have no formal organisation to seek help in the times of need.
The association has completed formulating the bylaws and regulation. A taxi operator can be a member of the association by paying Nu 2500 as fees annually.
“When we hold meetings, most operators come forward to join the association. None of the operators have said that they don’t want to become a member,” said the President of BTA, Rinzin Chophel.
Taxi drivers in Trongsa welcomed the initiative. They said they now have a place to share their grievances.
“Till now no one came up with such idea of forming an association though we have been driving taxi for years. I am very much happy to see them coming up with such initiative. I will also encourage my friends to join the association,” said Ngawang, a taxi driver in Trongsa.
The association hopes to include every operator in the country as members. There are about 50 taxi drivers in Trongsa.
