Majority of elderly Bhutanese do not have any saving. This is as per the research conducted by the National Statistics Bureau (NSB).
The study was done to understand the situation of senior citizens in the country. The report which is the first of its kind was released last week.
According to the study, over 72 per cent of the older people in the country is reported to have no savings. Only 20 per cent of them are said to have savings. The data was collected from a questionnaire survey conducted in eight dzongkhags. Some 150 elderly citizens were questioned. The report also states that more urban residents do have savings.
The research was conducted using in-depth interviews, focus-group discussions, and questionnaire surveys.
The objective was to investigate and provide deeper insights into the social, economic, and other vulnerabilities of elderly people.
