The Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) will soon establish a Gewog Gagdey or Gewog Based Police in Lingzhi Dungkhag. The RBP has completed the feasibility study for it recently.

Lingzhi is among the most remote places in Thimphu. But that doesn’t mean it is crime free. A lot of the times, conflicts are resolved mutually. Sometimes, people just let go as there is no police station nearby where they can report matters that require police intervention.

Police shared that some of the cases that went unreported were quite serious. The establishment of Gewog Gagdey in Lingzhi is expected to help address all these issues.

Four police personnel will stationed in Lingzhi Gewog to help main law and order in the dungkhag. It will also help overcome unique challenges in policing in a remote community like Lingzhi. Police also hope it will help monitor corrupt practices.

The Gewog Gagdey project was initiated in 2016 by the RBP. Through the project, the RBP intends to reorient the police goals to meet the emerging needs of rural communities by promoting increased contact and partnership with the people.

It will address issues ranging from loss of livestock to more serious organized crimes such as vandalism of heritage sites and illicit trading of cultural properties and protected species.

Lingzhi Dungkhag has three gewogs and is home to about 2,000 people. The RBP plans to establish Gewog Gagdeys in four other remote gewogs in the country.
