Human wildlife conflict and water related issues in 15 socio-economically disadvantaged villages in Haa, Lhuentse, Monggar, Samtse and Sarpang are expected to be resolved by mid this year.
A three-year project funded by the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation (BTFEC) and implemented by the Tarayana Foundation will make this happen.
BTFEC granted Nu 12 m for the project to the Tarayana Foundation yesterday.
The project- Human Wildlife Conflict and Water Issues in the Rural Communities will focus on addressing food security issues and capacity building of the 15 selected villages.
“We will help the communities install electric fencing because right now one of the major issues in rural communities is food security, which is threatened by human wildlife conflict,” Tarayana Foundation’s Director Sonam Pem said.
“While installing electric fencing, the capacity of community members will also be built in managing these fencing.”
Water issues and enhancement of livelihood opportunities are other areas of focus. “Water management is one of the major issues. In some communities, they would have water but because of the management issues, not all the households get enough water,” Director Sonam Pem added.
“So, we will address this by protecting water sources. We will also be helping them in terms of craft skills such as product diversification of cane and bamboo products.”
The BTFEC is also supporting a project to develop conservation management plan for biological corridor 5 and hotspot mapping of human wildlife conflict areas in Pemagatshel
BTFEC signed the grant agreement for the project with the Forests and Park Services Department of the agriculture and forests ministry yesterday.
