The Department of Local Governance under the Home Ministry launched the ‘Local Government (LG) Members’ Entitlement Rules & Regulations 2018’ in Thimphu today. It will act as a framework to implement provisions of the Local Government Members’ Entitlement Act of Bhutan 2015.
Earlier, in absence of this legislation, the Home Ministry couldn’t provide pension and other retirement benefits to the first elected Local Government members (Gups, Mangmis, and Tshogpas) when they completed their tenure in 2016.
It was only through the Royal Decree that the LG members received retirement benefits such as pension and gratuity. However, now with the rules and regulations on LG members in place, claiming retirement benefits and other entitlements are precisely outlined.
It has provisions on salaries, yearly increment, communication allowances, and sitting fees, type of leave, and travel and retirement benefits among others.
