Spring Blossom is a documentary film that raises awareness on suicide prevention. Written and directed by Thinley Tobgyel, the 35-minute long film was produced by Monggar Dzongkhag’s Education Sector.

The film was launched in Monggar recently. It tells a story about a girl student named Shingley. She is good in studies but her mother neglects her. Her life takes a turn for the worst after a man rapes her.

The traumatic experience plunges her into depression and she tries to commit suicide several times but all her attempts fail.

Later, her parents and school authorities come to know about her state and they come together to help her. With their love and support, Shingley starts afresh.

The documentary ends on a positive note with the protagonist beginning a new chapter of her life.

Karma Dema, who played the protagonist, said she accepted the role inspired by the strong social message the film carries. “The film aims to help prevent youth related issues and that’s why I agreed to be part of it.”

There is also another reason, a personal one, which drew her to the project. One of her relatives died by suicide, and for her, the film was about telling an experience she’s lived.

It took nearly two years to produce the documentary. “The film touches on what causes people to take their own lives and how suicides can be prevented,” Monggar’s Chief Dzongkhag Education Officer Wangchuk said.

“It talks about how we can help people battling depression and save them from suicidal thoughts.”

The documentary is the first such initiative by the Monggar Education Sector.
