Come 2019, Babesa residents will not have to bear the unpleasant smell that comes from the open sewerage pond. This is because the waste water stabilization pond in Babesa will be replaced with Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) treatment plant by next year.

The construction works have already begun. The SBR treatment plant comes equipped with an odour control system.

It will also have a higher capacity to treat waste water. The present open lagoon system has a capacity to treat 1.7 million litres of waste water on a daily basis.

“With the increase in the population, the current open sewerage has exceeded its capacity,” says Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee.

The new system can treat 12 million litres of waste water in a day, almost 11 times more than the present system.

The Thrompon said south as well as more than half of central Thimphu use the treatment plant in Babesa,

He added that by 2019, the establishment of the new treatment plant will help maintain clean environment in areas stretching from Norzin Lam to Changzamtog, Changbangdu, Lungtenphu, Olakha, Babesa and Semtokha.

The construction of the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) treatment plant is funded by the Asian Development Bank. The project will cost Nu 800 m.

The existing open sewerage pond was built in 1980.
