Of late, Sonamthang Village under Ngangla Gewog in Zhemgang is witnessing some structural developments. One can see that a few of thatch-roof homes have been replaced by concrete buildings.

However, locals there are unwelcoming of this sort of haphazard developments. They say, for a village to be transformed into a rural town, a proper township planning is needed. This means, the place must have better road networks, proper drainage system, and other urban amenities.

“Unlike the past, our village is developing fast and to have a good township, we need proper planning,” said one of the residents, Lungten.

The Gup of Ngangla Gewog, Rinchen Wangdi told BBS News that Sonamthang Village will be transformed into rural town and discussions on town planning were raised in Dzongkhag Tshogdu. “Several buildings have already been constructed before. But now, we have been discussing to develop proper rural town planning. We have discussed the matter in DT. We even got order from the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement.”

Sonamthang started to become a bustling rural town after Panbang- Gongphu highway opened to traffic a year ago. Establishment of Regional BPC office, dratsha, and a central school were other factors that contributed to economic growth of the village.

Today, there are about 106 households in Sonamthang.
