Khujukla Goenpa (monastery) in Wangdue Phodrang was connected with a motor-able road a few years ago. Since then, swelling number of pilgrims visit there.
In recent times, even tourists have visited the monastery, said the caretaker, Kuenga Penjor. Khujukla Monastery is perched on a hilltop, overlooking the Wangdue Phodrang dzong. It takes about an hour’s drive along the Nahi Gewog Centre road to reach the monastery.
“During the auspicious occasions, more number of devotees comes here,” added the caretaker.
Locals said, two roads are diverted from the GC road, which head to the monastery. Another shorter route via place called Chamu Laptsa was also cleared, making the monastery accessible from different places.
More visitors have addressed the problem of getting butter and cooking oils to offer butter lamps.
Khujukla Goenpa has the main relic of Chukchi-Zhey and the goenkhang of Laygoen Jaro Dongchen. Built in 16th century, Lam Ngawang Chojay is believed to have founded the monastery. It was reconstructed in 2002.
Today, the monastery houses a shedra (monastic school) with 16 monks.
