It was stifling especially in summer inside the CGI sheet huts of the ECCD Centre of Dechhenling Gewog in Pema Gatshel. The space was also small, so the children were not able to move freely.

This was how the centre remained until recently.

Thanks to UNICEF and the government, the CGI sheet huts have now been replaced by a single-storey concrete building.

“The CGI sheet huts did not have ceilings, so it heated up easily and children felt suffocated,” Kinzang Choden, a parent said.

“The children suffered in summer because it was too hot inside and the huts were small, which made things worse,” Tsheten Zangmo, the centre’s facilitator said.

Most importantly the new building has toilets inside.

“Before, we were worried snakes might bite our children when they go out to toilets. But now the centre has toilets inside and we are relieved,” Kinzang Choden added.

The new building was constructed at a cost of Nu 1.4 m. There are close to 30 children at the centre at present.

The center, one of the oldest in Pema Gatshel, was established in 2013. It has lifted a huge burden off the shoulders of the parents in the gewog who otherwise had to take their children with them to work.
