The Bongdeyma Industrial Estate site in Monggar is abuzz with developmental activities. The sounds of hammers, saws, and some other machinery, blended to create a song of productivity. But, the lone site engineer is finding it difficult to monitor and gauge the progress of the work.
The project is being executed by the Department of Industry under Ministry of Economic Affairs in Thimphu. The department’s Chief Engineer, Kezang Deki, in her interview to BBS News, said they are going to recruit three additional staff (one site electrical engineer, one project engineer and one administrative assistant).
Currently, the industry department is developing basic infrastructure such as internal road, staff quarter, pedestrian walkway, storm water drains and water distribution network.
Construction of three-storey office building, water reservoir, and access road and bridge connecting Lingmithang to the industrial park have been complete.
The initial construction of 110.43-acre Bongdeyma Industrial Estate began in mid 2016.
It is one of the four major projects that the government prioritised for eastern and southern region during the 10th Five-Year-Plan (FYP).
Once complete, the industrial park management office will have provisions of banking, custom and clinic services. The industrial park has identified 154 plots and the plots will be allotted to the developers in a month or so, said the Chief Engineer, Kezang Deki.
The Department of Industry will encourage developers to set up cottage and small industries such as forest, agro and mineral based industries in the park.
The Government of India has allocated nearly Nu 200m for the industrial estate development project. However, the cost is highly likely to increase to Nu 570m.
Bongdeyma was also identified as special economic zone (SEZ), which would serve as a hub for wood-based industries.
