A total of 862 vehicle crashes were reported last year, an increase of 136 from 2016. The figures were obtained from the Info-Comm and Transport Statistics report released by the Ministry of Information and Communications.
In terms of deaths from road accidents, the numbers remain almost the same. Traffic accidents claimed 105 lives in 2016 and 104 in 2017.
The number of people injured in road crashes rose to 457 in 2017 from 355 in 2016.
According to the report, Thimphu recorded the highest number of vehicle accidents and causalities at 506, followed by Paro with 174.Thimphu also saw the highest number of student accidents.
Drink driving, inexperienced driving and speeding were cited as some of the major causes of accidents. The report says bad road conditions and weather, and mechanical failures caused only few accidents.
