The new district hospital in Haa was inaugurated on Sunday, which has put many healthcare related issues to rest.
Prior to the existence of the hospital, Bali Basic Health Unit (BHU) grade 1 catered as a pivotal healthcare centre to the people of Haa for decades. But in doing so, the BHU faced numerous challenges. Lack of medical facilities was one of them.
The new hospital will be manned by two doctors, a dentist and nearly 60 other health professionals.
“This hospital is 20-bedded. That is why doctors, nurses, technicians, and laboratory and medical equipment are more here. The hospital will provide better services to patients,” told Dr. Ugen Dophu, Health Secretary to BBS News.
Likewise, people there are also hopeful of receiving a quality healthcare service. “Serious patients had to be referred to either Thimphu or Paro hospitals and this was troublesome when we didn’t get vehicle,” said one of the residents, Tshering Pem.
“The new hospital is located nearby, so we are glad we don’t have to travel to other districts to received medical treatment,” said another resident, Rekey.
After the fire gutted Bali BHU in early 2016, His Majesty The King commanded to construct the district hospital at the old guest house site, located near Haa Thromde.
The structure was completed in one year and 10 months, before the contract period of two years. The project cost the government Nu 135m. Meanwhile, health ministry has set out plans to upgrade the Bali BHU to Traditional Medicine Standard 1.
“There are lots of plants and trees in Haa, so indigenous researchers will study on how to make medicines from these plants. The BHU will function as research centre for indigenous medicine,” asserts the health secretary.
Except for Gasa, all other 19 districts have a district hospital each.
