With recent completion of a motor-able bridge over Ghatia River, the two chiwogs under Sangngachholing Gewog in Samtse are expected to prosper over the coming years.
The 18metre Nidupling Bridge connects the two chiwogs: Dephellingtoed-Namseling and Dephellingmaed-Khangzangling with rest of the gewogs in the district. Villagers are hoping the bridge will play vital role in enhancing their agricultural incomes and launching many other socio-economic development programmes.
One of the residents, Choeten Zam said, “In absence of a bridge, we suffered a lot. We carried ill people on our backs and took a longer route to reach them to the hospital. Now, we don’t have to go through these hassles.”
Like her, many others said they don’t have to bear the hardship. “We can take our produce to the nearby market. The bridge has shortened the distance from our chiwog to the nearby market,” added another villager, Ugyen Dema.
The bridge has reduced travel time between the chiwogs and the gewog centre. Earlier, farmers walked over an hour to reach the gewog centre. But now, it’s 20-minutes away by a car.
Nidupling Bridge construction project was commenced in April last year and cost the government Nu 7m to complete the entire project.
Including this bridge, Sangngagchholing Gewog now has over five motor-able bridges of which majority are along the highway.
