The Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) collected Nu 21m in fines in the financial year 2016-2017.
Despite harsh rules and frequent inspections, drink driving remains one of the top traffic violations. In the financial year 2016-2017, over 2,000 people were fined for the offence and Nu 3.8 m was collected in fines.
“Traffic police has been doing a wonderful job, especially during zero tolerance days on Fridays,” Pemba Wangchuk, the Director General of RSTA said.
“You drink, but don’t drive. That’s our aim. We cannot excuse anyone because drink driving is risky.”
Close to 2,987 people were fined for failure to produce license on the spot and Nu 2.2 m was collected in fines.
The RSTA also collected a little over Nu 1 m for using mobile phones while driving.
