The recently blacktopped Gewog Centre or GC road in Tarathang Gewog, Sarpang has brought relief to areca nut farmers.
Unlike previous years, this time, they don’t have to take their farm produce to vend at the market. Due to blacktopped road, customers come to the farmers’ place to buy Areca Nut.
Farmers say the returns are expected to be higher than the past years since they don’t have spend money on transportation charges. “Ginger or Areca Nut businesses are doing well because the road has been blacktopped. Looks like this time, income would be enough for our children’s educational expenses,” said one of the farmers, Yangzey Lhamu.
Others said even the price of areca nut is better this time.
“Last year, we could fetch only Nu 2000 per quintal. But today, we could fetch Nu 4000 for same quantity,” adds another areca nut grower, Sonam Chojay.
The seven kilometre GC road from Umling Gewog Office till Tarathang Gewog was blacktopped a month ago. The government has spent Nu 20.3m for the blacktopping works.
