Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Trashigang will discontinue the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from next year.
Students opting for the course will be enrolled in Gyalpoizhing College of Information Technology in Monggar from July next year.
This July’s intake students will be the last batch to graduate from the college. Currently, four batches of Computer Science students are pursuing the course.
“All resources will be shifted to the Gyapoizhing College. We are also going to transfer computer science lecturers but these are going to be done phase by phase,” said R. Balamurugan, Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs at Sherubtse College.
He added: “This year, two assistant lecturers will be sent to Gyalpoizhing. Again next year, we will send two additional teachers and retain only three teachers at Sherubtse to teach some programming papers in BSc Physics, BSc Mathematics and IT.”
The reason to remove the course was to streamline and improve the quality of courses that are being offered at the college. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science was introduced under the Royal University of Bhutan in 2006.
The course teaches undergraduate students about Java, programming language and database system among others. Sherubtse College has set out plans to launch new courses: BSc Statistics and BSc Data Science from next year.
