The Nazhoen spiritual retreat camp, the first of its kind in Samtse has become a huge success. And the credit all goes to the 24 teachers, who have volunteered to teach young scouts about the country’s culture and traditional values.
“I felt it is important for our children to learn our traditional values. As they grow, their personality will be determined by our culture and traditional values,” said one of the teachers at the camp, Yonten Norbu Sengdhen.
And with the curiosity to learn the traditions and values, about 300 students are attending the spiritual retreat camp at Yoeseltse Middle Secondary School.
The 13-year-old Sonam Chophel has come all the way from Gomtu Middle Secondary School to experience his first spiritual retreat camp. And he gives unexpectedly a wise reason for coming to the camp.
“The knowledge I gained from the camp is helping me to become a good person. I learnt about four harmonious friends and their friendship values, which are relevant in my life,” Sonam adds with a sincere smile on his face.
Apart from friendship values, Sonam Chophel also got know the importance of team work.
He became a scout since two years ago. But he shares this is the first scout camp that helped him to develop good personality characteristics. Other scouts have similar opinions.
“The camp’s programmes were more effective than previous ones. It was all about refining our life. The values will be useful when we become adults,” said Sonam Choden, a scout from Samtse Higher Secondary School.
The organiser of the three-day camp, Samtse Scouts Association said due to limited budget, they couldn’t take in as many scouts as possible.
“If Bhutan Scouts Association grants adequate budget, the programme such as this will many young scouts,” told the association’s Secretary, Tshewang Gyeltshen to BBS News.
The three-day camp ended recently and the participants were from 12 schools in Samtse. With nearly 4000 scouts, Samtse beats other districts when it comes to number of youth scouts in the country.
