The offices in Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde will now have to use eco-friendly biodegradable plates and cups at public gatherings, including meetings, workshops and celebrations.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between the thromde and various regional offices to stop usage of plastic plates and cups.

The MoU was signed after an inter-agency coordination meeting between the thromde and regional offices.

All the regional offices agreed to ban the use of plastic plates and cups.

“During meetings, we sometimes use plastic plates and cups but from now we will use eco friendly plates and cups,” said the Manager of RICBL, Sonam Dendup.

Eco-friendly plates and cups made from areca nut tree leaves from Pemathang Gewog will be used in place of plastics.

Meanwhile, another MoU was signed between the thromde and Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative, a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), for the supply of biodegradable plates and cups.
