Coinciding with the Birthday of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, the “Handbook for Families and Caregivers of Children With and Without Disabilities” was introduced to parents and teachers in Thimphu, yesterday.

Funded by UNICEF and the Ability Bhutan Society (ABS) – a civil society organisation, the reference book was penned down by Jean Ho, Senior Speech and Language Therapist from Singapore.

According to the handbook, 90 per cent of a child’s brain development happens before the age of five. It adds parents and caregivers in particular have positive influence on child’s overall growth and development.

That aside, the handbook highlights about child’s behaviour management, tips on basic nutrition, sleep duration, and screen time among others. “It is important for parents and caregivers to know all these because a child’s brain development from birth till five is crucial,” Jean Ho underlined as she explained about the handbook.

Some parents shared the guide book is helpful to them. “This reference book made me realise that we need to give prime focus on our children’s growth. Giving them nutritious food and how to do potty training,” said Tawchu, parent.

Jean Ho intends to familiarise parents and caregivers in other districts about the Handbook for Families and Caregivers of Children With and Without Disabilities.
