The crowd and traffic congestion near the Centenary Farmers’ Market (CFM) in Thimphu is expected to ease soon.
The Thimphu Thromde is constructing three additional vegetable markets in Olakha, Hejo and Changbangdu. Each market is likely to accommodate around 30 vegetable vendors. It will also have other necessary facilities such as meat shop, restrooms and car parks.
Once these three projects are complete, residents in North and South Thimphu will not have to visit the CFM.
“The main reason is if we make vegetables available at different places, the crowd and traffic congestion will reduce at the existing vegetable market,” shared Thimphu Thrompon, Kinlay Dorjee, in an interview to BBS News.
The new markets will operate on a fee system like the CFM market. Thrompon added: “We are planning to construct vegetable sheds in Babesa, Simtokha and Taba as well.”
The thromde is spending around Nu 20m for the construction of three vegetable markets. Funded by the Government of India, works are expected to be complete by the end of this month.
