The People of Lhoongtsho and Yoeselpang of Chang Gewog in Thimphu say crime is growing in their community and that a police outpost would be of great help.

Lhoongtsho and Yoeselpang used to be peaceful places, but not anymore. Fighting has emerged as a common night scene in the area.

“I have lived here for seven years and until recently we never had any crime taking place,” Yezoer Dema, a Lhoongtsho resident, said.

“But now, we see many crimes and fighting is rampant. The fights happen mostly under the influence of alcohol. We report to the police but since it’s a bit far away, it’s hard for them to get here on time.”

Other crimes, such as auto-stripping, vandalism of public properties and theft are also on the rise.

“My tenant lost the front tyres of his van on the night of Biswakarma Puja last year and after that, miscreants stole spare tyre from my Bolero,” recalled Kinley Wangmo, another Lhoongtsho resident.

“People even steal clothes left outside to dry at night.”

Some residents had their car fuel tanks damaged and others woke up to find their cars with flat tyres. Bar and shop owners say drunk people knock on their doors at odd hours.

“Since ours is a roadside settlement, drivers create nuisance. They drink and disturb us past midnight,” Sumpola, also a Lhoongtsho resident, said.

About 20 criminal activities were reported in Lhoongtsho and Yoeselpang last year.  Residents attribute the increase in crime to the growing population and commuters in the area. They say they have requested for a police outpost several times in the Gewog Tshogdu but nothing has happened so far.

“It’s mostly outsiders who come and create problems. They drink and take drugs and commit crimes. We have been asking for a police outpost since the time of the former Gup,” Minjur Wangmo, the Tshogpa of Lhoongtsho said.

The issue was even discussed in the Dzongkhag Tshogdu in March this year.

The Senior Superintendent of Police said a feasibility study will have to be carried out first. He added at the moment Babesa Community Police Station renders necessary help.
