Almost five months after the launch of the non-subsidised LPG cylinders, the fuel depot in Tsirang has been able to sell only eight. The non-subsidised LPG cylinder comes in green colour and the depot has over 60 of them.
The economic affairs ministry launched non-subsidised LPG cylinders in February this year to meet the demand for LPG in the country. It is also to make subsidised LPG easily available to the rural households.
But officials in Tsirang say people are not willing to buy the green gas cylinders because of its slightly higher cost. Non-subsidised LPG cylinders costs Nu 1,650, which is Nu 200 more than the subsidised LPG cylinders.
As for refills, it costs Nu 255 more than the subsidised gas cylinders.
“When the subsidised gas cylinders are out of stock, we encourage people to take green gas cylinders, but they refuse to do so because of the cost,” Sonam Dendup, the depot’s Assistant Branch Manager, said.
Meanwhile, the Tsirang fuel depot is expecting to receive subsidised LPG cylinders supply tomorrow after remaining out of stock for almost a week.
Officials said the truck that transports refilled gas cylinders broke down on the way, which delayed the LPG supply.
