Punakha police apprehended a 22-year-old man on Tuesday for allegedly stealing four donation boxes from Khamsum Yueley Namgyel Chorten in Punakha.
The incident took place last month.
Police is said to have recovered more than Nu 16,000 from the suspect who is a former monk.
The suspect was arrested after his 24-year-old associate was detained.
The duo allegedly removed window frame and entered the Chorten. Police found the empty donation boxes while combing the nearby areas.
The case will be forwarded to Office of Attorney General. According to Penal Code of Bhutan, if convicted, they will be sentenced to minimum of three years imprisonment
