The method of dyeing yarns naturally is back in Nagzor-Wooling Chiwog under Orong Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar after hiatus of almost five decades.

The Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts (APIC) recently trained some 32 weavers in the chiwog on how to naturally dye threads. Weavers were given hands-on experience of colouring wool by using fruits, weeds, and tree leaves.

Following the training, weavers preferred using naturally dyed yarns. Earlier, they bought imported coloured threads. “We dyed thread with pomegranates, walnuts and onion covers. Now we want to use these threads to weave textiles,” said one of the weavers, Kelzang Choden.

Weaving is one of the prime sources of income for villagers of Nagzor-Wooling Chiwog.
