The 12-Kilometre Phobji Gewog Centre (GC) road in Wangdue Phodrang has been blacktopped and became trafficable recently. The Works and Human Settlement Minister, Dorji Choden, joined the villagers of Phobji Gewog for the inauguration of the road yesterday.
She told the gathering that realising that road connectivity is instrumental in bringing socio-economic developments in the villages; the government has accorded highest priority to building and improving roads in the country. Regarding Phobji GC road, Lyonpo Dorji Choden said, its quality is not good.
“Quality wise, the road is not as we expected but we must know that’s due to adverse weather condition here. Also, since the area is marshy, bitumen doesn’t set in properly,” added Minister Dorji Choden.
However, in her affirmative tone, she said the condition of the road will improve with minor renovation works.
The road was blacktopped earlier as well but within no time it developed cracks and potholes. Road officials blamed weather and marshy area for deteriorating the road.
Phobji GC road will benefit over 700 households of two gewogs- Gangteng and Phobji. “The road will help us immensely in transporting our agricultural products and during sickness. Other benefit would be in terms of attracting tourists,” said the Gup of Phobji Gewog, Jamtsho, adding that next time, the thickness of asphalt should be more than the present one.
The blacktopping of Phobji GC road was executed by the Department of Roads Office in Lobesa. The total fund for the project came around Nu 41.6 M.
