Some 14 farmers in Chhiphoong Village under Chhimoong Gewog, Pema Gatshel formed a Cane and Bamboo Craft group just a year ago. And today, cane and bamboo products have become an important source of income for them.
With the help from Tarayana Foundation, the members acquired the skills of making cane and bamboo products. They produce different sizes and designs of baskets and sell them in Nganglam. Products are also taken by civil servants, hoteliers and restaurant owners in Pema Gatshel, and some are even taken to Thimphu by Tarayana Foundation.
Until now, the group never faced challenges regarding market accessibility. “We make chocolate containers, pack lunch and vegetable baskets and dustbins. We sell the products in bulk and haven’t faced problem,” told the coordinator of Cane and Bamboo Craft group, Sangay Norbu.
Since the group doesn’t have a storehouse, the villagers manually make their products as and when they get orders. However, the coordinator confirmed plans to construct a storehouse in near future.
“As we don’t have proper store facilities, the shape of bamboo baskets often gets spoilt when take it for sell to other places,” added the group’s coordinator.
Once all the required facilities are in place, the group said, they will be able to scale up their cane and bamboo products. According to BBS correspondent in Pema Gatshel, Chhiphoong is popular for cane and bamboo plants.
