People of Ura and Chhumig gewogs in Bumthang are looking forward to reap the benefits of Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant or POL services centres in their community.

The Farm Machinery Corporation Limited (FMCL) has started constructing the centre in Chhumig while similar facility in Ura will begin in a month’s time. This initiative is part of the corporation’s project to establish 65 POL service centres across the country by June this year.

In Chhumig, the POL service centre is being constructed above Chhumig Gewog Centre. The centre, once complete will facilitate people to refuel their cars, refill LPG cylinders, purchase car lubricants, and spare parts for farm machinery.

The POL Head of FMCL, Tashi Wangdi said the project at Chhumig is highly likely to complete by end of this week. “People might be able to avail themselves of our services by next week.”

Locals of two gewogs have commended the project. Currently, in absence of POL service centres, they have travel to Chamkhar Town (which is located over 20km away from Chhumig and from Ura, the distance is about 50km) to refuel their cars or refill their cooking gas cylinders.

“This time is peak farming season and to operate power tillers, tractors, and chains, we have to get fuel from Chamkhar. For that, we have to requests people who are heading there and often times, our requests are turned down,” said one of the farmers in Ura, Karma Jurmin.

He adds: “Other hassle is we have to book a taxi to go to Chamkhar and most of the time, taxi drivers complain of unpleasant smell of petrol and diesel from their car.”

Others have faced similar situation. “Chamkhar is quite far from Chhumig. Sometimes we have to come back disappointed when there are no cylinders. For refueling cars, we have to waste our fuel traveling there. Once the POL service centre opens, it will be very convenient,” added Loday.

Apart from Chhumig and Ura, Dagana Dzongkhag will also get similar facility as the construction is already underway. Likewise, there are plans to construct POL service centres in Saling Gewog, Monggar.

The Farm Machinery Corporation Limited has constructed six such service centers so far.
