Amidst a range of academic pressure derived from need for perfection, worry over grades and competition schools face, Zilukha Middle Secondary School (ZMSS) in Thimphu is taking its own pace to run the race.
The school has initiated a programme called ‘Quality Sharing Time’ every Tuesday with its students. The programme was initiated to know and understand students better. The programme is in its third year and has been a success, share the teachers.
On Tuesdays, students skip morning assembly at 8:30 am and head towards their classrooms. For 45-minutes, students and teachers spend a relaxed time sharing the academic related issues and challenges, which otherwise is often neglected due to limited time.
“If you look at the school settings, we are very much into academics. From eight till 4, the classes are academic driven. So it’s our sincere thinking that we must give students time for other enrichment programmes,” told Principal of ZMSS, Dawa Tshering to BBS News, adding: “The programme is to let teachers know what students are going through. It can be their difficulty in learning certain subjects and how teachers come up with timely interventions.”
The programme has allowed teachers to realise the importance of both instructional and emotional support they can give to the students.
“When we launched the programme, students were aware of the programme’s objective. They were hesitant to share their problems with us. But after two years, we see vast difference in them. They share their problems to us and we try to help them,” said Guzi, teacher of Zilukha MSS.
Students also shared that the programme has been helpful to them.
“It has helped us to express our problems to the teachers. This way, our teachers give us advices on how to overcome our challenges. The programme motivates us to become a person as wished by our parents,” said Sherab Zangmo, Student of Zilukha MSS.
When a school finds such space to commit their time to students, it only adds to building a strong bond between a teacher and a student. And initiative like this is critical in enhancing student’s learning and engagement.
