Reaffirming the role that engineers play in the development of a nation, Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay said, “Engineers are vital in preserving the traditional Bhutanese architecture in the modern era.”

Prime Minister was addressing the Works and Human Settlement Conference in Monggar yesterday where over 900 engineers and planners of 20 districts have congregated.

In his address to the gathering, he also emphasised that engineers have greater roles and responsibilities in ensuring quality infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, and drinking water supply in the country.

But, Prime Minister reminded engineers that with many Bhutanese choosing modern designs for their homes, it has become imperative for engineering sector to keep the traditional designs intact.

“Now-a-days, people prefer modern designs like build houses with plate and dark glasses. While such trend is not a matter of concern, however, this poses risk to our traditional architecture.”

Prime Minister also said: “We have to strike a balance. The responsibilities for this lie in the hands of our engineers.”

He commended engineers for their contributions towards rapid progress of East-West highway widening project and blacktopping of many gewog centre roads in the country.

Apart from that, Prime Minister highlighted that the government has again prioritised to supply safe drinking water to each and every household in the 12th Five-Year-Plan.

The four-day conference, which ends tomorrow saw discussions on various issues related to construction industry, and come up with strategies to overcome the challenges to build better and sustainable infrastructure in the country.
