The Bhutan Accreditation Council (BAC) has accredited three more colleges in the country. The institutes are the College of Language and Cultural Studies (CLCS), College of Natural Resources (CNR) and the Royal Institute of Management (RIM).

All three tertiary institutes were awarded grade A certificates yesterday.

The accreditation of tertiary institutes is mandated by the accreditation manual of the the Bhutan Accreditation Council. The colleges and institutes go through a process of evaluation and are then graded based on six core standards.

“First one is curriculum elements, number two is research innovation practices and international linkage, third one is government leadership and management, fourth one is infrastructure and learning resources, fifth is student services and the  sixth is internal quality assurance and enhancement system,” Nar B. Raika,  the Chief Program Officer of Quality Assurance and Accreditation Division, said.

He added, the purpose of the accreditation process is to ensure the institutes maintain quality of education. It is also to help them assess their own performance and identify ways for improvement.

“I think such recognition from accreditation body is important for several reasons,” Dr. Phub Dorji, the President of the College of Natural Resources, said.

“It actually recognizes all the hard work that went into developing the college so far. It would be very important to attract international students as well as international faculty.”

With yesterday’s accreditation, the BAC has now accredited all 12 tertiary institutes in the country. The Royal Thimphu College is the only institute that got A+ grade certificate.
