The people of Lambi_Lamjosa Chiwog of Norboogang Gewog in Samtse are in dire need of two bridges over Tharay stream. The existing temporary wooden bridges are not in proper state, rendering them unsafe for use.
Both the wooden bridges were built by the people. Fifty households came together to build the lower bridge and seven households built the upper one. Each household contributed Nu 100 each.
But the bridges are not strong. The lower bridge actually collapsed and had to be rebuilt. “A vehicle fell into the stream when the bridge collapsed,” recalls a villager.
“We live in constant fear because the bridges are not strong and can collapse any time,” Tek Bdr Rai, another villager said.
“Our children have to cross the bridges on their way to school. There are shops nearby and better bridges would help them easily transport goods.”
“We had to build the bridges because without the bridges, we cannot cross over to either side during monsoon,” Kitab Singh Rai said.
Bishnu Maya Rai said the lack of proper bridges prevents children from going to school sometimes. It also poses challenges in times of medical emergencies.
“There are people who depend on the meager income they earn from the sale of vegetables at the weekend market, but the condition of the bridge makes their trip to the market impossible sometimes,” Bishnu Maya Rai added.
The people had hoped for proper bridges after the chiwog was connected with farm road in 2012. The 13-kilometre bridge has been of a little use in the absence of proper motorable bridges.
But the people said their plea have fallen on deaf ears.
The gewog authorities said the construction of the lower bridge will begin by January next year. As for the upper bridge, it will be replaced only if the gewog receives a formal proposal from the people.
The upper bridge connects some seven households with rest of the Lambi_Lamjosa Chiwog.
The chiwog is over two-hour drive from Samtse.
