The constant change in weather and rain these past couple weeks seemed unusual and have had many wondering, but the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology (NCHM) says it is normal.

March, April and May are pre-monsoon months and the country is experiencing what weather experts call pre-monsoon rain.

Pre-monsoon months, weathers experts, explain are characterized by days that begin with clear sky and summer like temperature only to get dark towards afternoon followed by rain and strong winds, causing the temperature to dip.

“In the last few days we had a cyclonic circulation that formed over West Bengal and then also the western disturbance because of which we had thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in some parts of Bhutan, especially in the South,” Singay Dorji, the Chief of Weather and Climate Service Division said.

The monsoon is divided into pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon. Thunder and hail accompanied by strong winds are common during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon months.

The country has received a good amount of rainfall these past few days. “It’s basically due to the upper air circulation, which in simple terms means moisture lingering around the country or the Himalayan region. When there is more moisture, Bhutan receives continuous rainfall,” Sonam Tashi, a Weather Forecaster, says.

According to the National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology, more rain is in the offing. The country is likely to experience slightly more rain from next week, while monsoon officially begins from June.
