There are about 22 households along Trashigang-Kanglung highway and the owners have been asked to remove or dismantle their houses by July 5. The houses, mostly single-storied, were constructed illegally.

Some were built on government land. Others have failed to maintain the road right of way, which is a 50-feet distance from the highway.

Following a joint inspection by the dzongkhag, Department of Roads, municipal officials, and Department of Forest, the house owners have been notified several times before the final one on 5th of this month.

The last notification states failure to comply would land the owners in court. But the house owners say they don’t have a place to move to. Others say they have incurred huge expenses in building the homes and dismantling them is something they cannot think of doing.

“I don’t know what to do now,” Namgay Lhamo, one of them said.

Namgay and other house owners are in dilemma. The deadline is looming closer, but they are still struggling to come to terms with reality.
