Locals in Yalang Gewog, Trashi Yangtse, want their school to be upgraded into central school. In absence of a central school, after completing eighth standard from Thragom Lower Secondary School, children are sent off to schools far from their gewog.

Phurba Dorji said having a central school will immensely benefit villagers ” We are not happy because we did not get a central school. Thragom has a large campus. Parents of children who are studying in Thragom School are mostly farmers.” He added children would have benefitted since central schools provide free amenities.

A villager, Jigme Tshering, said without a central school some of them send their children to as far as Thimphu for education “If it becomes a central school, then there would be about 800 to 900 students. We will be really thankful if we can get a central school.”

Yalang Gup, Chosung Wangdi, said a central school has been the people’s wish for long and that the gewog has several primary schools. ” If the government could provide us with a central school, it would benefit our children.” he added.

The good news is Trashi Yangtse Dzongkhag has a plan to turn Thragom Lower Secondary School into a special school where it will enjoy the similar facilities given to any central schools.

Thragom Lower Secondary School in Yalang Gewog currently has over 130 students. The school was established 50 years ago.
