The brother of a man who died in the hospital has now filed a case with the Bhutan Medical and Health Council after an investigation report on Tuesday from Hospital ruled out negligence by health workers and stated complications such as cardiac arrest to be the cause of death. Jit Bahadur Rana had earlier accused Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) staff of negligence.
He said his brother died in April at JDWNRH following an operation in the stomach. He had claimed negligence by health professionals have led to the death of his brother.
Dissatisfied and believing the investigation report to be untrue, Jit Bahadur Rana wanted Medical and Health Council (BMHC) to intervene in this case. “I was not happy with the report so I decided to put up the case to BMHC. I am doing this because I wanted to improve our medical health services for others.” he said. “Such negligence would not only damage people’s trust in health professionals but also discourage people from taking medical services. so I hope BMHC will reinvestigate the matter.” Jit Bahadur said he is willing to appeal the case to higher authority if the investigation from BMHC does not come out satisfactorily.
However, the Medical Superintendent at JDWNRH, Dr. Gosar Pemba denied the allegation. “The Quality and Management System (QMS) did a thorough investigation and came to conclusion that there was no gross negligence on the part of the health workers.”
He added the patient was operated and transferred to the ward and was monitored. “But if patient develops certain complications like cardiac arrest or some other complications, these are unforeseen which are very difficult to prevent.”
Jit Bahadur’s brother was referred to the hospital after a log hit his stomach in Paro, where he worked as a carpenter.
