The RENEW’s awareness programme on issues related to domestic violence has been well received by the residents of Phuentshogling under Chhukha District.
A team from RENEW carried out a day-long sensitisation programme on Saturday. Highlighting the provisions of Domestic Violence Prevention Act, RENEW officials informed people about importance of obtaining marriage certificates from courts. They sensitised people on matters related to childcare protections.
That aside, RENEW briefed residents on the role of community based support system in Phuentshogling town. RENEW is the abbreviation of Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women. It is a civil society organisation.
“I learnt that obtaining marriage certificates is extremely important for married couples. Add to this, RENEW’s community based support system’s role is town is effective,” said one of the residents, Kinzang Namgay.
Others have similar views to share. A woman named Kinley Wangmo said: “I didn’t know a group of volunteers from RENEW are here until this advocacy programme.”
According to RENEW, there are four types of violence- physical, emotional, sexual and economic.
“We want to aware people that domestic violence is not at all acceptable in the society. We are living in a GNH country and we deserve to lead a happy family life,” said Dr Meenakshi Rai, Director, community outreach department under RENEW.
The volunteers of RENEW’s community based support system said, new residents in the town aren’t aware of their services. They say the service is active since 2007 and deal three to four cases in a month.
The team conducted similar event at Gomtu in Samtse yesterday.
