Bumthang will have a festival ground or Tendrel Thang just below the Jakar Dzong in the next Five-Year-Plan (12th plan). The construction of the ground has been endorsed at the Dzongkhag Tshogdu (DT) meeting, yesterday.

The existing structures at the proposed ground- the Dzongrab and Drangpoen’s residences, Royal Bhutan Police’s detention cell, transit camp and family quarters are all planned for relocation. A budget of Nu 25m has been allocated for its construction in the upcoming FYP.

“The existing structures are very old, our plan is to dismantle the structures and develop the area into a festival ground should we get the approval from the government,” said Jampel, the Chairperson of Bumthang DT.

He added: “Currently, the courtyard at Jakar Dzong becomes crammed with people during Tshechus.  So, we want to have a proper festival ground and we are working towards it now”

Other local government members are also in favour of the plan. “We are really happy for the initiative. The people of my gewog have huge support for it,” said the Mangmi of Chhumig Gewog, Chundu Tshering.

Currently, finding a parking space at the dzong’s parking lot is not easy. During the time of festivals and administration of Wang (blessing) in the dzong, not many turn up due to lack of parking space.
