Towards promoting and protecting economic interest and safety of the consumer, the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched a Toll Free National Consumer Helpline- 1214, in Thimphu, today.

The toll free number will provide prompt redress services to the complainants. “We will be able to address grievances of the consumers, any unfair trade practices that are prevalent in the market. Consumers can also call the helpline if service is not provided as per the payment,” Gopal Pradhan, the Officiating Director General of OCP, told BBS News.

The Helpline was established as per the Section 84 of Consumer Protection Rules and Regulations, 2015 which states, “The Office of Consumer Protection may establish a toll free national consumer helpline and online reporting and complaint lodging facility to promote and protect the interest of the consumers.”

At present, consumers make use of the toll free number during the office hours from Monday to Friday. But, it will be available 24 hours with the recruitment of full time telephone operator in immediate future.

“Our trade inspector or the help line advisors will be able to give you or the consumers in Bhutan how to solve the problem and how to lodge the complaint and also what type of cases they have,” added Gopal Pradhan.

Since its activation on January 1 till now, the consumer helpline received 37 calls.
