For the first time, the entire justice sector in the country congregated in Punakha for the past two days to develop a “Justice Sector Strategic Plan.”
In this with this, the draft strategic plan was unveiled to the officials of Office of the Attorney General (OAG), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Royal Bhutan Police (RBP), Judiciary and Bhutan National Legal Institute (BNLI).
Officials felt the need to have robust strategic plan to improve and strengthen justice related services and cooperation among the justice institutions.
The strategic plan will act as a guideline for relevant justice stakeholders in providing access to justice and redressal system.
That aside, the plan would ensure proper coordination, minimise duplication of works and maximum utilisation of resources. It is aimed at free, fair, just and quality services in the justice sectors.
“Not one institution can achieve the result by itself especially when you are thinking as profound as access to justice. It is going to require the police, lawyers, and judges,” said the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP, Bhutan, Niamh Collier Smith.
The national steering committee and justice sector working committee will be identified to start implementation works of the Justice Strategic Plan, remarked the Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk.
The Chief Justice added: “We however have an important task of working out the details towards ensuring the effective implementation of plan through resolute and collaborative efforts from all relevant instructions.”
The work to prepare the draft strategic plan began in July, 2016. The final endorsement will be done in due course of time.
