Flash floods have wreaked havoc in Jarey and Maedtsho in Lhuentse. The floods struck the two gewogs on Wednesday.
In Jarey, four farm roads were washed away because of which some students of Ladrong Primary School were forced to remain home.
Jarey Gup Kinzang Minjur said, teachers and parents helped some students to get to school today. He said, by tomorrow, all the students will be able to make it to school.
As for the damaged farm roads, the Gup said the gewog has no budget to reconstruct since the 11th Five Year Plan has already come to an end.
Meanwhile, in Maedtsho, the flood has washed away the campsite of the Diamond Construction Company Private Limited, leaving eight people living in the camp homeless.
The construction company is involved in the blacktopping of the Gewog Centre (GC) road. “The flash flood occurred around six in the evening due to heavy rains,” Sonam, the company’s Site Manager, said.
“We lost not only the campsite, but also other things, including three laptops, a television set and a printer.”
The flood has also badly damaged a tripper truck of the company and washed away a motorbike of one of its employee.
Driving has been rendered impossible on some parts of the GC road. People were seen leaving their cars parked on the way and continuing their journey on foot.
A near-complete bridge over Wamburchhu, which was to connect a native cattle-breeding centre in the gewog with a grazing land on the side of the river, has been washed away as well.
“We have some grazing land around the farm, but it’s not so good, but we have a good grazing land on the other side of river. We were so excited because the bridge was about to be complete. But now it has been washed away,” Tashi, the centre’s manager, said.
A team from the dzongkhag visited the affected places yesterday and provided disaster relief kits to the flood victims. The damage assessment is going on and reconstruction works are likely to begin very soon.
This is the second time Lhuentse was hit by flashfloods in two years time. The first one occurred in Shawa, Gangzur last year.
